Matthew 25:14-15 "At that time the Kingdom of heaven will be like this. Once there was a man who was about to leave home on a trip; he called his servants and put them in charge of his property. He gave to each one according to his ability: to one he gave five thousand gold coins, to another he gave two thousand, and to another he gave one thousand. Then he left on his trip.”

In this parable of the talents Jesus is trying to describe how he would deal with people when He judges them. I'm not going to go into the whole parable here, but instead I want to focus on one phrase that is easily overlooked. Notice that it says, “He gave to each one according to his ability...” God gives us talents or gifts according to our ability to handle them. He doesn't give us more than we can cope with, but neither does us short-change us on the gifts He gives us to serve Him with. Everyone is blessed with one or more talent. We are all expected to use those talents in a way that serves and brings honor to God. If we don't use them, we end up losing those gifts.

Talents come in a variety of forms. Some people are talented at laying out a beautiful spread of food that will serve a large group. Some have a gift of making people accepted and at ease in any situation. Others are talented at music, building, sewing, problem solving, and the list can go on and on. Quite often a person will have many different talents, but whatever God has blessed each person with, all are equal in God's eyes. None are considered higher or more important than the rest. Take a look at Romans 12:3-6;

Because of the kindness that God has shown me, I ask you not to think of yourselves more highly than you should. Instead, your thoughts should lead you to use good judgment based on what God has given each of you as believers. Our bodies have many parts, but these parts don't all do the same thing. In the same way, even though we are many individuals, Christ makes us one body and individuals who are connected to each other. God in his kindness gave each of us different gifts. If your gift is speaking God's word, make sure what you say agrees with the Christian faith.” Romans 12:3-6

No one is to think of themselves more highly. All are equally important. Everyone is given different gifts. When we all work together, using the gifts God gave us, we are doing the work God designed us to do. He created us with individual gifts that are to be brought together to work as one body. Our gifts fit together with each other like a pieces in a puzzle. Each piece is needed for the puzzle to be complete. No one is unimportant or without a gift of some kind. All are needed and everyone has a responsibility to use those gifts God has given each person. No one is ever given more than they can handle. Each person has only what is appropriate for their abilities. Our tendency is to either run ahead of God and do what we want instead of letting Him show us what His plans for us are, or we sell ourselves short, and think our abilities are less than what they really are. The Bible is full of stories of God calling people into action to do things they didn't think they were capable of doing or that they were not trained to do. It's still true today. God still surprises His people by using them in ways they never thought they could do. All He needs is an open and willing heart from us. He does the rest of the work.
