Matthew 5:3 "You're blessed when you're at the end of your rope. With less of you there is more of God and his rule." (The Message Bible)
I chose the Message Bible translation because it phrases that verse more clearly than others I've read. Most of your Bibles say it this way; "Blessed are the poor in spirit! For theirs is the kingdom of Heaven."
The Greek translation for the word used for "spirit" is pnyoo'-mah which means:
a current of air, that is, breath (blast) or a breeze; by analogy or figuratively a spirit, that is, (human) the rational soul, (by implication) vital principle, mental disposition, etc., or (superhuman) an angel, daemon, or (divine) God, Christ’s spirit, the Holy spirit: - ghost, life, spirit (-ual, -ually), mind.
The only one that fits would be the mental disposition, such as being at the end of your rope. Blessed are those at the end of their rope. Another word for Blessed is Happy. Happy are those at the end of their rope. Why would Jesus say such a thing? It is when a person is at the end of their rope that they finally give in and let God take over. When God is in charge of a person's life, that life becomes a part of the Kingdom of Heaven. But the person can also be happy because they will experience the comforting of the Kingdom of Heaven through the Holy Spirit.
One day I was struggling with seizure activity and felt like I was at the end of my rope. I didn't know how I was going to manage getting through the day. I prayed for help to just get through the day. I have a photo gallery on a website along with many other photographers. A lady, who lives in a State many miles from me, and who I had never even met on Internet before, commented on one of my photos. We ended up e-mailing each other about photography frequently during the day. Her e-mails kept me going. As I was going to bed that night something impressed me to e-mail her and thank her for helping through a rough day. I resisted at first because I felt uncomfortable telling her and thought it might make her uncomfortable. The impression persisted until I finally gave in and sent her an e-mail and thanked her for helping me through the day. As it turned out, she was also going through a very difficult time. She had been struggling for a few days. That night, when she went up to turn off her computer, she had so many tears in her eyes she could hardly see her computer, but as she was getting ready to turn it off, she saw my message. Knowing she had helped someone else encouraged and comforted her. We were hooked up together by God. He knew we would need each other's friendship and conversation and made sure we would meet each other. Both of us were blessed. Both of us would have missed that special experience if we were not at the end of our rope and let God help us.
