Luke 8:6 Some of it fell on rocky ground, and when the plants sprouted, they dried up because the soil had no moisture.
In the parable of the Sower and the Soils Jesus talks about seed falling on rocky ground. If you've ever had to work with rocky ground you know that the soil is shallow and under the soil is hard rock. The roots of a plant, in that soil, cannot go down to the source of water. The only moisture and nutrients are found in the shallow dirt. Therefore the roots stay near the top of the ground.
The rocky soil represents the shallow heart. It is the person who gets emotional and caught up in worship or evangelistic meetings, but when troubles come, their spiritual life dries up. There is nothing wrong with feeling emotions in worship, but the roots of the experience need to go down deep into the soul. It needs to go deep enough that the person will take time for spiritual feeding each day, and allow the Living Water to feed the soul and carry them through the difficult times. Jesus is the Living Water. It is only by letting Him take part of our lives all day, every day that we are able to get through the hot, trials that will come our way.
The shallow heart has only a head knowledge of God's word. They don't have the life change that the word can cause when the heart is open to it. They listen to the sermons. They will comment on how good the sermon was, but when it come to put what they heard to use, they won't do it. They will choose to solve the problems on their own and only when things don't work out will they think of God, but unfortunately what they will think, is how unfair God is. The fact that they never once turned the problem over to Him and were willing to accept God's decision doesn't seem to even cross their minds. They just blame God and leave Him. Yet, had things turned out differently they would have taken credit for their success rather than give God the credit.
It is vitally important that we keep our minds and hearts open to God's word and let it go down to our souls and become a way of life. Our spiritual roots need to be drawing from the Living Water and from daily nourishment from study and time with God. That life change will make it possible for us to automatically turn to God for our source of strength in our troubles. He will see us through them. He will walk through them with us.
