John 2:3-4 When the wine had given out, Jesus' mother said to him, "They are out of wine." "You must not tell me what to do," Jesus replied. "My time has not yet come." (GNB)
God is very serious when it comes to His laws. He expect us to love Him with all our mind, body, and soul. He expects us to love each other as we love ourselves. There are stories in the Bible of people who did not follow God's orders and suffered as a result of their disobedience. God is so exact in His plans that He put the sun, moon, stars, and our earth in precisely the perfect position. He has plans for this earth and the people on it, and those plans are set to happen at the time He chose. This same God is also very interested in the events in our lives. Even the little things. He allows us free choice, which then allows us to get in the way of His plans. When that happens, He is able to make adjustments for those times when we are stuck and need help. He can change His plans to help us while at the same time show us that He is who He says He is and turn a difficult situation into something that will glorify Him.
God doesn't do things when we expect Him too. Notice the people were out of wine, and in need, before Jesus did His miracle. He also doesn't do things in the manner we expect. Imagine what the bride and groom, at the wedding feast thought, when Jesus asked them to fill the pots with water. The bride was probably horrified at the thought of serving water to her guests. But that horrified feeling was instantly changed to a happy relief when wine came out of those containers and it was the best wine! God gave them the best, when they were in need.
He still does that for us today. We just get so caught up in our expectations, or like Jesus' mother, start telling God what to do, that we miss seeing what He actually did for us. His blessings often come in a different form, and at a different time, than we expected. When He seems to give us an answer of "no" to our request, it is because that is the answer which is better for us. Like Jesus' mother, we need to stand back and say, "Do whatever He tells you to do." We need to humbly back down and let Him do His work and be willing to do what He asks us to do. Trust Him to be flexible. Trust Him to love us so much He will do what is best at the right time. For some of us, we may never understand the reasons for His actions until we get to heaven. That's what being a humble, trusting, servant of God is like. We just trust and wait, knowing it will be made clear to us some day. When it is made clear, we will see the wisdom and love in His actions and not wish for things to have been any different.
