Luke 12:25 "Can any of you add an hour to your life by worrying?"

In Luke 12:14-21 Jesus told the parable of the rich fool. Then He goes on to show how God will provide for His children. He first says not to worry about what we will eat or wear. He says "Life is more than food, and the body is more than clothing."

What Jesus is saying is that life is more than food and clothing. There are things to think about too. Life is about serving God and bringing souls to Him. God will provide our needs for us. He will see that our needs are met. We just need to remember the difference between needs and wants. We can be thankful and content with the plain, wholesome food He gives us. When we are blessed with more, then we can be even more thankful. The same is true of clothing. It is good to be dressed. It is good to keep the body clothed and protected from the elements. But again, we need to be content with what God gives us. If He has supplied us with simple garments, be thankful for them and keep them clean and tidy. If He has given us nice clothing, be even more thankful and take care of them. He also supplies us with our desires as long as it keeps us and others in a life of dependence on Him. God loves to see His children happy, but He also wants us dependent on Him. Too often when we have the desires of our hearts instead of the desires of His heart we easily forgot God and keep wanting more.

Jesus pointed out that the crows are fed even though they don't have a storehouse, or plant seed. He talks about the lilies of the field and how they are clothed even more beautiful then Solomon was in all his majesty. Yet the lilies don't work or spin yarn. Even the grass in the field is clothed in beautiful greens. Nature doesn't have to worry. Nature relies on God to meet their needs. We are much more important to God than the grass or lilies or crows. He desires to see us happy and our needs met.

Jesus isn't advocating being lazy and not working, but there are times when a person is not able to work. Even those who are working can have situations come up that make finances tight. Jesus said, "Do not seek what you should eat or drink, nor have an anxious mind. For all these things the nations of the world seek after, and your Father knows that you need these things." Then Jesus said, "But seek the kingdom of God, and all these things shall be added to you. Do not fear, little flock, for it is your Father's good pleasure to give you the kingdom." God wants us happy. It is His good pleasure to give us the kingdom!

Greed and independence from God have no place in God's kingdom. In verse 33 Jesus said, "Sell what you have and give alms to provide yourselves money bags which do not grow old, a treasure in the heavens that does not fail, where no thief approaches nor moth destroys. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also."

God does not want us placing all our dependence or trust on ourselves or on our finances. He doesn't want us to worry. When we depend on ourselves we create worry because we think we need to solve the problems. Greed and selfishness are another source of worry. When we buy needless items, or accumulate things, the more things we have to worry about falling apart or being stolen. It's the simple life, dependent on God and free of greed that makes a person truly happy and free from so much worry. A person free of worry has more energy to reach out to other and help others find their way to God. Each soul brought to God is a treasure in Heaven. Everyone of us are God's treasures. Trust Him. Do not worry. Let Him take care of your needs.
