Colossians 3:22-25 Servants, do what you're told by your earthly masters. And don't just do the minimum that will get you by. Do your best. Work from the heart for your real Master, for God, confident that you'll get paid in full when you come into your inheritance. Keep in mind always that the ultimate Master you're serving is Christ. The sullen servant who does shoddy work will be held responsible. Being Christian doesn't cover up bad work.

These texts use the word “servants” but the principal of these instructions is how to behave towards those we work for. There are four points that are made in these texts and I don't have room in one message to cover them all so we'll have to look at these texts again next week.

The first thing we see in this text is to do what you are told to do. The second point is don't just do the minimum. Do your best. The third point is Jesus is our ultimate Boss. Therefore if your boss is asking you to do something morally wrong, then the first two wouldn't apply.

When I was working, I would notice it was common for employees to forget who was doing the serving and who was doing the bossing. I had co-workers who had the idea that since they were being paid to be there, the boss needed them, therefore they could tell the boss what should be done. At the same time I had bosses who acted as if they were being very generous when they paid the employee for their hard work. The truth is, God is the real Master. He is the real boss. He is the boss of both the employee and the employer. Our lives should be devoted to serving Him. Our every act should be in response to what He asks of us. Whatever work we are doing, volunteer or paid, we should give it our very best because it is God we're working for. The text above is God's promise that everyone will be paid in full when we get to Heaven. That payment won't be in money, but Heaven is our reward.

Jesus served without pay, or compliments. He even knew that those He was serving would eventually put Him to death. He is our example. He is where our focus should be. If our eyes are on ourselves, we become selfish, greedy, complaining, workers. But if our eyes are on Jesus, we will humbly and graciously serve, without the need for recognition. Just remember, Jesus does see us. He is fully aware of the work we are doing. If Heaven notices when one sinner is saved, and rejoices over that one person, then I'm sure Heaven is also aware of when we are remaining faithful in serving our Creator in all we do. Give Jesus control over your life. He will change you and help you through those rough days in your work!
