doesn't brag--in words, even of gifts which it really possesses; an indirect rebuke of those at Corinth who used the gift of tongues for mere display.
Christ illustrated this so perfectly in His birth and His life. He didn't come down to our earth with lightening flashing or trumpets blaring. He didn't go around bragging about what a great guy He was to come down and save us poor souls. Instead, he came humbly as a baby. He wasn't born in the fanciest place, with everything clean and with His own personal nurses to see to His every comfort. His bed was a feeding trough.
For 30 years He quietly worked as a carpenter. It wasn't until the time came to make Himself known that He finally let people know His true identity. Even then, He didn't boast about being God. He only let the people know who He was and what He was here for so they, and the rest of us, would know that God had come to pay the price of sin so we wouldn't have to. It is His death on the cross that makes it possible for us to be able to join Him in Heaven.
Jesus had much to boast about, but instead, He lived humbly and devoted His life to serving others and then to die for us. We have nothing. Yet we run around boasting about our homes, cars, income, position in society etc. These are all things given to us by God. We can do nothing by ourselves. I'm thinking that instead of bragging, we should be giving all the credit and praise to God.
