Psalm 46:10 "Be still and know that I am God!" MKJV
Be still… How hard it is for most of us to be still. We feel guilty if we’re not keeping busy. Somehow we’ve gotten the idea that it is honorable and right to be constantly busy and on the move. But by staying busy we don’t allow time alone with God. We don’t allow our minds the time needed to be at peace and fortify ourselves with a quiet, sweet communion with our Lord. I read Psalm 46:10 in various translations. I really like the way these translations express it. Look them over and see the different ways of being still;
Be at peace in the knowledge that I am God: BBE
Our God says, "Calm down, and learn that I am God! CEV
"Stop fighting," he says, "and know that I am God, GNB
Let go of your concerns! Then you will know that I am God. GW
Be at peace, calm down, stop fighting, let go of your concerns. I especially like the way the God’s Word translation says it. Let go of your concerns! THEN you will know that I am God. It is not until we stop fussing and worrying that we are able to hear God's voice and get to know Him.
Luke 5:15 -16 shows us that our Lord found it necessary to get away for some private time with the Father. “The news about Jesus spread even more. Large crowds gathered to hear him and have their diseases cured. But he would go away to places where he could be alone for prayer.” Luke 5:15-16. Jesus knew the value of spending time alone with His Father. It was the only way to have strength to handle the crowds and show the Father's love to the people. We also need time alone with our father. Time away from people, the phone, or any other distractions. We need time to pray and time to be completely quiet to hear our Father's voice. We cannot hear it if we are constantly running our problems over in our mind, or if we pray and then take off to work or whatever life has waiting for us. Praying is necessary for our lives, but it is also just as important to just be still. To quiet the mind, to keep our body relaxed, and to just listen for that still small voice of God.
Everyone hears God's voice in different ways. He reaches us in ways we can understand. It is not right to insists everyone must hear God's voice exactly the same way. For some people it's a gentle nudging in their mind. For others, it's a flowing of thoughts and ideas which are in harmony with Scripture. It varies with each person. In all cases though, it is required that we be still, get to know God, recognized His authority in our lives, and listen for His guidance. He promises to guide us continually.
The Lord will guide you continually,
and satisfy your soul in drought,
and strengthen your bones;
You shall be like a watered garden,
and like a spring of water,
whose waters do not fail.
