Heb 13:4 Marriage is to be honored by all, and husbands and wives must be faithful to each other. God will judge those who are immoral and those who commit adultery.
Heb 13:5 Keep your lives free from the love of money, and be satisfied with what you have. For God has said, "I will never leave you; I will never abandon you."
Heb 13:6 Let us be bold, then, and say, "The Lord is my helper, I will not be afraid. What can anyone do to me?"
Heb 13:7 Remember your former leaders, who spoke God's message to you. Think back on how they lived and died, and imitate their faith.
Heb 13:8 Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever.
Let's take each verse, one at a time, so we can get a good view of what is being said.
Verse 4. Guard your marriage as the priceless gift that it is. Whatever your difficulty is, bring Christ into your marriage. Don’t get up in the morning without praying together first, and don’t go to sleep without praying together first. That’s your first protection against any outside forces that are waiting to rip your marriage apart.
Verse 5. Those outside forces can be money problems, or a drive to want more money or more “toys”. It can cause you to become so busy that you start ignoring each other and that leaves the door open for another person’s attentions to come in and destroy your loyalties to each other. It’s not wrong to have money. If God blessed you with wealth, then praise Him. It is wrong for money to have you, and for it to come in-between you and God and in-between you and your spouse. Be happy with what you have and trust God to help you with your real needs.
Verse 6. Trust in God. Have confidence in what He can do through you. Don’t worry about what other people might be saying about you or if they like you. If you’re living for Christ, it won’t matter. By having confidence in Christ, you won’t lean so heavily on your spouse or become clingy and add to their own daily frustrations. As long as you’re both living for God, no one can do anything to either one of you without God allowing it. No matter what a person does to you, they can’t take your soul or your love for God away. They can’t take your salvation away. You are not a ruined person as long as God is living in you. Instead, you are a wonderful person!
Verses 7 and 8. Study the Bible. Learn from the life of Christ and those who followed His example. Remember God doesn’t change. He is the same today as He has always been and will remain the same. He loves you. He wants joy for you. He wants to help you. And most of all, He wants you and your spouse in Heaven with him.
Please don’t give up. Guard that precious marriage of yours with Bible study and prayer TOGETHER.
