Hebrews 4:13 And no created thing is able to be hidden before Him, but all [things are] naked and have been exposed to His eyes to whom we [must give] an account. (Analytical-Literal Translation)
I think Hebrews 4:13 is a wonderful text. It's a text that helps us understand just how much God loves us. Especially if you continue to read on. But first notice how much God is aware of each one of us. There is absolutely nothing we do that God does not see. We're so good at hiding our actions and thinking that if our co-workers, church members, neighbors, or anyone else around us doesn't know what we're doing then we're all right. We forget that God knows our every deed and action. But the good news is that He still loves us. He doesn't like the wrongs we do, but he does love us. Read on in Hebrews for the rest of the good news.
“Then having a great High Priest who has passed through the heavens,
Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast the confession.
For we do not have a high priest not being able to sympathize with our weaknesses
but One having been tried in all respects according to our likeness, apart from sin. Therefore, let us draw near with confidence to the throne of grace,
that we may receive mercy, and we may find grace for timely help.”
Hebrews 4:14-16
Jesus can sympathize with our weaknesses. He understands our frustrations and our hurts. He's been frustrated and hurt too. We don't need to feel fear in confessing our sinful acts. God already knows them. He doesn't like them and He doesn't want us to sin, but He does understand why we do those things. It doesn't excuse sin, but we don't need to be afraid of a distant God who just views our actions without understanding. Because He loves us and because He understands, we can confidently approach the throne of grace. We can ask and receive mercy, grace, and help. We can know we are fully and completely loved at all times.
We cannot hide, therefore we have nothing to hide. God knows who we are so we have nothing to prove. It doesn't matter what anyone else says about us. The God of the Universe knows us and loves us. That's why Hebrews 4:13 is such a wonderful text. With nothing to hide, we can be truly free and happy!
