Genesis 1:26 And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth. Genesis 2:7 And the LORD God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul.
Man is the only part of creation that God used His hands to create. The word “create” when talking about the other things created is actually two different Hebrew words. One is aw-saw, which is, to do or make, in the broadest sense. The other word is baw-raw, which means to create, cut, select, or feed. In Genesis 2:7 the word for “formed” is yaw-tsar means to fashion, form, or frame. The idea is to squeeze into shape, or to mold into a form as a potter would work with clay, to form or shape something.
In Genesis 1:26 the words “us” and “our” are used. This indicates Someone else was with God. John 1:10 says, “He was in the world, and the world was made by Him, and the world knew Him not.” John was talking about Jesus. Jesus was involved in creation along with His Father. So we have Father and Son working together to create man. This creation is very important. Man would have the ability to use reason, to rule over the animals and the earth. Man would be able to walk and talk with God. With loving hands, clay was scooped up and carefully shaped and formed into the shape of what was to become man. Then God blew the breath of life into man, and man became a living being.
Then tragedy struck. Adam and Eve disobeyed God. The result of disobeying God is death. The creation that God so carefully formed and loved so much had to die. But God the Father and God the Son had another plan. Someone else would die for Adam and Eve’s actions. It was decided the Son would die for them. This Father and Son, who had created together, loved their creation so much they made plans to one day become physically separated from each other for 33 years. Then for several horrible hours they would become completely separated from each other as the Son took on the sins of Adam and Eve and all the rest of humanity. It’s no wonder God announced at Jesus’ baptism, “You are My beloved Son, in who I am well pleased.” (Mark 1:11) This Son, who had lived in Heaven, and enjoyed being a part of creation with the Father, loved the created so much He left Heaven. For 33 year He could not see the Father face to face and end up being crucified by the very creation He loved. Even when the people were crucifying Him, He continued to love them and ask the Father to forgive them.
Now the Father and Son, along with the Holy Spirit are waiting and working. They’re waiting for the day they can bring everyone home to Heaven. But they still don’t want anyone to have to die an eternal death so they keep trying get the people’s attention so the people will see their need for the Savior, to recognize how full of sin they are, and accept the gift of Salvation. God is still in love with His creation. He’s done all He can. The Father sent His Son to pay the price for us. Now it’s up to us to decide to believe in Them and give ourselves completely and totally to Them.
