John 14:6 Jesus said, "I am the Road, also the Truth, also the Life. No one gets to the Father apart from me. (MSG)

Jesus is trying to prepare the disciples for what is about to happen. He knows they will soon become discouraged and frightened. He knows life will look dark and hopeless to them, so He offers encouragement and hope to hang on to during those times. Jesus tells the disciples not to become anxious or distressed, but to believe in the Father and in Jesus. Or another way of saying it is to trust or have faith in God and Jesus. Putting all the worries and troubles in the hands of God and letting Him take care of it, relieves a person from the job of worrying about what will happen next.

Then Jesus goes on to tell the disciples that where His Father lives there are many places to live and Jesus is going to get things ready for the disciples because He is coming back to take them to live in those places with Him. We know the Father lives in Heaven so therefore that would mean Jesus is talking about Heaven. But Thomas doesn't understand this. Actually, we can't be too hard on Thomas because none of the disciples understood it at the time. So Thomas asks, “We don't know where you're going and how can we know the way?”

Jesus tells them He is the way, or the road. It is by His example and His sacrifice that someone can come to God and live in Heaven.

Jesus says He is the truth. There are no other Gods, no other Saviors, no other truth than Jesus. Jesus is the only example to follow, the only One who can make us clean and able to live in Heaven with Him.

Jesus also says He is the life. Jesus is God. He not only creates life, but He saved our lives by giving up His own. He is the one who makes it possible for us to live on this earth now and to live on this earth when it is made new. All life is dependent on Jesus. No one can do anything by themselves.

Jesus then says no one gets to the Father apart from Him. A person who does not believe in Jesus, does not follow His example, or does not believe it is only through the death of Jesus that they are saved, cannot have access to the Father or expect to live with the Father. It is only by totally believing, trusting, submitting to Jesus that we can then have access to the Father. There is no other doctrine, no other intercession, no other merit, no other way to the Father than through Jesus.

In verse 7 Jesus says, “If you had known Me, you would have known the Father also.” A relationship with Jesus is also a relationship with God. Spending time reading and getting to know Jesus is spending time getting to know God. We all can have access to the throne of God and enjoy a sweet and joyful communion with Jesus and the Father.
